The Magician and the Maiden
Effie Chaniotis
5th June to 4th Aug My art reflects the mythology and storytelling traditions of my Mediterranean background. I consider my paintings and sculptures to be like a frieze or pages of a storybook. As I create them and upon completion they lead me to the next part of the narrative. This element of mystery and their totemic and iconic style gives me the impression I may be engaging in a subtle form of alchemy or magic. After painting Starmen for a year I created a Magician sculpture and he marked the end of a cycle. The Head Dress Maiden appeared soon after and together they changed the themes in my work from starscape and flying men to dense pattern and arabesque motifs and feminine characters.
