Goddess of love and Existentialist Mosquito
Jack Hanningan
30 Sep to 27 Oct Muvva Erf is the goddess of love, creation, chaos and destruction. Whilst I was working on this character I realised that I had coincidentally stumbled upon the hindu archetype of Kali. and that there are massive parallels. I enjoy the tangents that occur during creativity. The Muvva is mother to all creatures, loving and kind, she keeps the most vulnerable in a drawer close to her heart. She operates from a place of pure love but do not mistake her for a pushover, she is also driven by emotions traditionally seen as negative. Anger, sadness, despondency and disappointment. Muvva Erf reacts and punishes also. There is a mechanical aspect to her thought processes and she will destroy and eradicate. This work is a response to the current issue of climate change and preservation of the beautiful creatures that have equal rights to inhabit our earth. Existentialist Mosquito was born one night whilst avoiding a mosquito, I asked myself, "Argh! What is his purpose?” I speak through him, he is my voice quite often when I am considering my lifes purpose and my feelings. He can be a pleasure seeker or a depressive failure. He is full of self doubt and self criticism, one minute arrogant the next full of angst. |
The Seventh Noir
Angela Hughes
27 May to 23 June "In 2007 I completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts Honours. My research looked at the confession in contemporary art; the act of making the personal life public. In 2014 I completed a Doctorate of Visual Arts. My research was then directed towards animal rights in contemporary art; how they effected each other within society, either positively or negatively, and how art might be used as a cause for change. Since graduating and becoming unhindered by academic rules, these two areas of practice have become intrinsically and inextricably linked. Through my work I hope to develop an intimacy with my viewers that relates to both the animals involved in the work and the issues surrounding their treatment by humans. I believe it is an exciting time to be making artwork about animal rights, as society is very quickly coming to realise that there are serious problems with the way animals are treated. As art has always reflected life, a trend can already be seen emerging, with many artists investigating social, political and environmental issues from an emotional perspective." https://www.facebook.com/angelahughesartist/ |

The Garden
Helen Bender 1 to 28 April I started painting a few years ago, and developed a sense of what I really liked to create. I was drawn into interpreting the different form and textures of trees and thus created a series of gums based on photos others and I had taken. I love the colours depicted in the wide variety of trees we have available to us everyday as we walk around the suburbs. Nothing surprises me about my work when painting flowers – it just represents my love for gardening through a 2 dimensional medium. My exhibition is not really to showcase my work but to encourage others who think about giving painting a go, to do just that. It really is fun. |

Untitled new work
Eugene Mulipola 4 to 31 March Still finding my creative footing, my new pieces are a random collection of snap shots reinterpreted into monochromatic acrylic paintings and pencil sketches. Like all art I welcome the viewers own interpretations if there are any or alternatively they can be just enjoyed (or not) for what they are, paintings & sketches. |

Joel Dirt
18 Dec to 3 Feb I am creating this body of work to explore texture and form with manipulation of the human shape and the coinciding states of mentality. I experiment with the normal and abnormal textures of skin, hair, and human made objects. I aim to collide a nostalgic style of vintage cartoon, the imagination of an anxious mind with realism and pharmaceutical related pastel colours. I have done this by creating a series of globule shapes, adding various childhood memories of characters and objects as well as experiences i have gained over time engaging them within a illustrative manner. I intend to confuse, revolt, intrigue and encourage the viewer to question how beauty can exist within the grotesque figures. My process derives mostly of still images, objects i collect on a day to day basis, the physical world, and scenarios that i write down within my diary to help juxtapose the realms together. as well as form and complete a series of ideas that i transfer into the medium of oil paint. To do this i use traditional methods of oil painting such as intaglio, scumbling and various styles of glazing to achieve depth and to give other dimensions towards my art. |

Journey of 100 Chai Cups
10 Nov to 16 Dec
The humble Chai Clay cup made of terra cotta clay is a familiar sight in India along stations, a quick drink of Chai marks a pause from the busy rhythms of the day. The artist translates the symbol of the Chai cup for the Fawkner Festa and along the Upfield line during the MoreArt festival, connecting with diverse community groups in making the cups that form installations. They become a humble vessel to serve a ritual drink of tea, to then return to ground in celebration of smashing during Fawkner Festa, connecting many in our community along its journey.

Unbrushed
Laurence Flegg
8 October to 4 November Lawrence has been a practicing artist since 1996 when he started drawing in gel ink. In 2009 he embraced acrylic painting and started to explore abstraction and what he could do with the medium. His practice has explored different ways to apply the paint to the canvas, which has included scraping and splashing the paint. Recently Lawrence has started experimenting with mediums to change the consistency of the paint which has enabled him to pour the paint and manipulate it. Lawrence is a Fifty something Schizophrenic, bipolar, voice hearer, Art is a vehicle that he uses to exercise the shit that builds up in his head. He takes those demons and puts them into his work which gives him relief when he see them on the canvas and not in his head. It clears the clutter from the upstairs abode so he can get on with living. A value can't be put on art as a therapy for mental illness, it is priceless. https://laurenceflegg.weebly.com/ The EC Window at Edinburgh Castle // 681 Sydney Road Brunswick

Ebb and flow
Louise Hunter and Jude Bowman
10 Sep to 7 Oct A collaborative work between Louise Hunter and Jude Bowman our work is a statement in response to the recent comments by Politicians who consider that water allocation rates are a given to farmers who may be experiencing drought conditions along the Murray Darling River . Our work focuses on areas located near The Barmah Lakes district where sensitive wetlands are potentially threatened if water rates are increased to sustain farming rights over the environment. That past farming practices are impacting on Plant and birdlife communities. The EC Window at Edinburgh Castle // 681 Sydney Road Brunswick

Melancholy
Yen Yen Lo
18 June - 15 July The Melancholies are creatures which make an appearance only in winter. They are forlorn little beings with big heads and tear-stained faces and seem quite content to wait out the cold in quiet shadowy corners. Edvard Munch's painting (Melankoli) depicting a man seated on a rocky shore in deep contemplation sparked off this series of small sculptures where I wanted to convey the same feelings of sadness and despair The EC Window at Edinburgh Castle // 681 Sydney Road Brunswick

Drill ItAlister Karl
23 April - 20 May I remember my grandfather's drill and the drill my father had when I was a kid. I was fascinated and a little scared of them now as an adult I work with them all the time and I have a shed full of tools that I delight in using. At the end of 2016 my shed was broken into and several of my best tools went. Amongst these tools was the cheap little Black n Decker that I brought when Brunswickarts was young. That drill hung hundreds of shows and helped build much of the space. What a lot of history to have vanish out the door in the shape of an almost useless old drill. This event inspired this series of drawings of objects that look like they would be more at home on the set of some SiFi drama then in my grandfathers shed. I would like to thank all the people who lent their generous support in the shape of new tools or financial support to get replacements. The EC Window at Edinburgh Castle // 681 Sydney Road Brunswick

Bond Song
curated by Alister Karl Opening 27th September 6 to 9pm Running 28th September to 6th October Genevieve Piko | The Chaotic Order | Alister Karl | Max Piantoni | Monique Barnett | Ive Sorocuk | The Dark Carnival Dolls and Jenna Corcoran | Jamie Rawls Every Bond movie has a Bond song..... We all know it. Sometimes we wonder if the movie or the song came first. From Russia with Love, Live and Let Die, Diamonds are Forever - most of the songs sharing a title with the movie, but not always. What about all those songs out there that sound like they should be Bond Songs but aren’t, or have the title that sounds like it should be a Bond Movie? Artists are invited to find their own Bond Song and in turn create their own Bond film, playing with the Bond conventions and formulas that have been around for half a century. Taking this as a starting point, the artists make work about their fiction, seeping not just into the Bond canon, but into the Hollywood film industry as well. |

Broccoli Platoon
Ross Anderson 4th to 27th April The concept for Broccoli came from watching my young nieces play with model farm animals and figures, and how they imagined the relationships between them. As a second year student at the Photography Studies College in Melbourne, I decided to develop the concept for my end of year folio. Using a variety of model soldiers, my intent was to emulate a relationship between the figures and develop a sense of camaraderie. Why Broccoli Platoon - well, most of the sets are edible. Other than a base of sand and the sky back drops, all the terrain has been created from food scrounged from the kitchen, from chickpeas to, well you know it, broccoli. All work was shot in camera with fully constructed sets, no Photoshop! |

The flotsam and jetsam of suburban life are re imagined into characters and situations. An absurd and dangerous game of contemporary Australian politics is played-out with snail shells, playing cards, action figures and matches. |

Medusa’s Answering Machine…
Nick Waddell 30th June to 20th July Apollodorus of Athens told an immortal story, and as its immortal, it can be re-told here by artist Nick Waddell. He explores the influence of seeing with his new marble works by re-imagining the power of the Gorgon with a modern twist, turning obsolete appliances into stone… This work explores ancient materials (Marble) and technologies combining them with the notion of the modern death of Technology (inbuilt obsolescence) We live in times where intelligent use of technologies is as important as ever, (Perseus slew the Gorgon’s head by cleverly matching his talents and wit to the tools supplied to him by Athena and Hermes). In modern times, we are asked to discard our technological devices once they become unfashionable, un-useable or un-workable. This in turn perpetuates the market for these “consumer” goods. This work looks at what becomes of the old when we turn our eye to the new? |

You Haven't Spoken My Language Yet
Ikuko Kimura 9th Dec to 1st Feb You walk past people on the street everyday and you don't know what they’re going through in their life. You don't remember most of them. But perhaps you might get an impression from one of them. You might meet some of them in somewhere. Artist would like this project to be one of the strangers you walk past today. You Haven’t Spoken My Language Yet looks at people who I haven’t met yet or people in my everyday life who are unknown. This is about my future life and my joy of meeting people who I haven’t met yet. We never know who is going be in our lives. Edinburgh Castle // 681 Sydney Road Brunswick

I pity inanimate objects (because they can’t move)* Lindsay Cox 3rd Feb to 29th March In their 1979 song* Godley & Creme posed this question, going on to ponder the happiness of objects around us by asking “is a tree as a rocking horse an ambition fulfilled, and is the sawdust jealous?” What of the unrealised ideas and thoughts we have? Wonderful as they are and as good they feel to revisit many never see the light of day. What sympathies do we need to extend their way for their looping paths through the eddies of the mind? How do we let them go? Who gives a shit? As an automatic collector/hoarder of interesting things all of the components in this collection have been around me for years without me knowing why. Plucked from the corners of my flat and combined automatically without judgment these items without use now meet ideas longing to be somewhere. Hopefully to play a silent Godley & Creme cover for passers by to hum along with. They’re now out of my flat/head and I’m glad for them. Edinburgh Castle // 681 Sydney Road Brunswick

Masking Tape & Tracing Paper
Collaborative project by Pamela Debrincat and Louise Hunter 5th June to 2nd Aug The two artists will take turns installing and reacting to each others work over the two month period. Hunter likes to layer masking tape in mountains often rapping her hands up in the process while Debrincat will fill miles of tracing paper with planet like circles in a wild 80's palette. Both Debrincat and Hunter have a repetitive materials based practice, but while Debrincat's work explores a nostalgic representation of the 80's, Hunter is more concerned with different forms of communication and representation. 16 breaths per minute
Rachael Wenona Guy 28 Sep to 29th Nov The EC Window “I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am.” Sylvia Plath In considering what spirituality means to me I keep coming back to the immutable truth of our visceral bodies and the sustaining force of breath. I choose to cast the same face in two different expressions in order to create a sense of uniformity and convergence. Despite our illusions of singularity we all share the air between us. Breaths, like invisible strands of mycelium weave us together - it is the shared medium that sustains our fragile and sacred personhood. Itenables life to proliferate. Each breath is as singular and generic as our form itself. Here lies the scared – in the remarkable replication of unremarkable. Until we can “… glimpse ourselves exactly in that vibrant, seamless web of interconnectedness, we are living in a kind of madness…” Susan Murphy rachaelwenona.wix.com/disquieting-objects The EC Window at Edinburgh Castle // 681 Sydney Road Brunswick

Bats over Brunswick
Caroline J Dale 4th Oct to 27th Nov Bats over Brunswick is a playful re-imagining of the suburb from the perspective of a relative newcomer. After driving across the Nullarbor from sunny Perth last winter, what struck me more than anything upon my arrival in Victoria was the large, leathery bats that flew overhead at night. Coupled with the bluestones, conifers and (comparatively) bitter weather, watching the bat's daily migrations lent a sort of pleasantly surreal Gothicism to my own weekly narrative of coffee, ink, falafel, late night bike rides and long trudges up and down Sydney Road. http://portfolio.carolinejdale.com The EC Window at Edinburgh Castle // 681 Sydney Road Brunswick

Pieces of Place – the Hoffman brick as a found urban artifact
Kim Jaeger | Sarah Heyward | Emma Grace | Andy Hutson | Kate Hill | Lindy McSwan
11th Aug to 8th Oct The way we live in our urban environments is changing. As our neighborhood landscapes grow taller and busier, the changing skyline provokes mixed feelings in our communities and suburbs. The unearthing of the soil and stone and collapsing of the bricks and mortar leaves us wondering about the lives and stories which have occupied these sites: the walls and ceilings, factories and sheds. Attachment to these places brings an emotional engagement and a wish to protect our surrounds. We look for pieces of place to hold onto, we wonder who made these bricks that built these walls?
